Acne Breakouts

January 9th, 2010 Gail Jones No comments

Acne is one of the commonest skin problems to afflict the human race and it it can be present in all people irrespective of age, caste, colour or gender. Acne is a tremendously embarrassing and burdensome problem, because it is so obvious and unsightly. Acne can be defined as red eruptions on the skin, sometimes filled with a white puss, causing discomfort and pain. The most common type of acne is called acne vulgaris or puberty spots.

Acne vulgaris can be defined as follows: … an inflammatory disease of the skin, caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland) . Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots or zits - [source: Wikipedia]. It is an upsetting affliction that we do not seem to have much control over. However, there are various methods in which to treat acne: you can try medication from a skin specialist or you can try home or natural remedies.

Natural remedies are less time consuming, less costly and have no side effects. However, they do require a little more patience, because the routines have to be followed diligently in order to cure the problem once and for all. A natural cure for acne is just as effective as medication. Here are a few natural remedies to cure your acne. To start with, your daily consumption of water should be at minimum of eight to ten glasses. This helps you to detoxify your system and destroy the harmful bacteria that cause acne.

A surfeit of oily food also leads to acne, therefore fried and spicy food should be strictly avoided. A near complete abstinence of fried and fatty food will have a marked, beneficial effect on an outbreak of acne. Furthermore, including chromium and zinc in your diet also helps to eradicate acne. There should be the correct balance of diet and hygiene.

A mixture of ground nutmeg with fresh milk regularly applied on the afflicted area also helps to eradicate acne. Cinnamon powder mixed with honey is equally effective in curing acne. Boiled Neem tree leaves applied to acne works as a disinfectant. [Neem is a tall, usually evergreen East Indian tree (Azadirachta indica) widely cultivated in tropical Asia for its timber, resin, bitter bark, and aromatic seed oil, which is used medicinally and as an insecticide (source = 'Free Online Dictionary')].

The afflicted area should be washed with anti-acne soap at least three or four times a day. Make-up should be strictly avoided when suffering from acne. Make-up makes acne worse. Acne should never be squeezed as it may cause infection or / and make it spread. Squeezing your acne may also lead to permanent scars on your skin, which results in your skin looking unsightly. Don’t let your hair fall onto the acne-affected area too.

Your hair should be kept tied back to avoid touching the acne. Pillow covers should be washed on a daily basis to avoid the bacteria spreading. The regular cleansing of your skin should be observed to keep it free from bacteria. Apart from this, a healthy lifestyle ought to observed with a balanced diet, exercise and sleep. Remember, if you take good care of yourself, illnesses will have less chance of afflicting you, especially such a small thing as acne!

Avoiding Burnout in Home Schooling

December 5th, 2009 Gail Jones No comments

It doesn’t matter if you are teaching in a traditional school or in a home schooling environment, there will come a time when you will experience burnout. This is something that you have to avoid so that your educational progress is not adversely affected.

Here are a few helpful tips that you can make use of to prevent possible home schooling burnout:

Know your limitations. From the very start, you should already know your limitations and your child’s limitations. You must be capable of taking things slowly sometimes, especially if your child is still young since you have to bear in mind your child’s learning capacity. Most students are average learners, obviously, so you have to take the lessons based on your child’s learning pace. Never expect your small child to read complicated reading selections nor your teen to ace SAT exams.

Try not to follow strict schedules, because this can put pressure on your child. You should simply set an interesting routine for your child to follow. Children spend most of their time doing routine activities like getting up in the mornings, eating hearty breakfasts, reading, writing, doing light chores, etc. You must insist that they finish their routine activities before they can play outside or with the computer. Even the routine activities vary from day to day but you have to make sure that your child follows these routine activities. You can throw in occasional incentives or fun activities if they finish their routine tasks early.

You should try to get into the spirit of home schooling with your child, since it is one method of developing a strong relationship with your child and if you and your child can relate to each other, you will find it very much easier to handle curriculum struggles and motivation issues later on. Aside from motivating and guiding your child, you can also follow some of your own hobbies like gardening or cooking. If your child sees you enjoying your own interests, then he or she will also be inclined to do likewise.

As your child is in a home schooling program, you should not attempt to copy a traditional schools environment. Try to use non-conventional methods when teaching your child. Home schooling is also about flexibility and creativity, so if you can achieve a light-hearted but firm atmosphere, you can more than likely avoid burnout.

Always try to remember that with home schooling, you don’t have to structure your teaching methods in the traditional way. You can just do things in a fun way especially with very young children so that they learn naturally. Just ensure you keep the day in the right perspective to prevent burnout. Although your children might forget some of the day’s lessons, that’s all right too because somehow they grow in intelligence as well as in physique.

Your children will always think back on your home schooling days together and remember with fondness how well you treated them. The old song goes: “… there’s no place like home” and for little students, home is the best place to learn the first lessons of life. If your teenagers are already in high school or college, they can still pursue home schooling if they so desire. That would also a good idea since you would get a chance to watch your offsprings’ development.

Parents always look after their children’s best interests, so, if after careful consideration, you still think that home schooling is the best option for your family, then go on with it. Just follow the tips mentioned above to avoid burnout. Have fun activities from time to time to prevent monotony.

Wanting to Eat Less on the Atkins Diet

November 24th, 2009 Gail Jones No comments

A very common, and astonishing effects of ‘doing’ the Atkins diet is appetite suppression. A lot of the followers of the regimen state that the between meal hunger pangs they used to experience just vanish and quite rapidly too. This fact makes it easier to stay on the diet and keep to lose weight. While other diets leave their followers starving between meals, the Atkins dieters receive relief from continuous hunger. The Atkins diet, with its specific recommendation of foods and ingredients, has powerful appetite suppressing effects.

The main factor is the amount of protein in the Atkins diet. Protein, much more so than carbohydrates, has the power to assuage hunger pangs. If you have ever eaten a carbohydrate dense meal and then felt hungry again a few hours later, you know that carbohydrates don’t have much lasting effect as a hunger satisfier. Protein, on the other hand, when it is combined with a small amount of healthy fats, can keep you feeling full for much longer periods of time.

One of the most powerful appetite suppressing foods on the Atkins diet is the egg. Eggs are a great form of quick and easy protein. A recent study showed that having eggs for breakfast would actually stave off hunger pangs throughout the remainder of the day. The study concerned two groups of women. One group ate eggs for breakfast and the other had a breakfast of bagels and cream cheese.

The calorie count for both breakfasts was precisely the same. The participants kept track of what they ate for the rest of the day and answered questions about their hunger levels and satisfaction levels throughout the day. The results of the study showed that the women who ate the eggs for breakfast felt more satisfied throughout the entire day and they ate less at each meal than those women who were in the bread group.

Eggs contain about 6 grammes of protein each, which helps to even out blood sugar and produces a feeling of satisfaction. Both of these factors help to curb cravings. Egg yolks also contain lutein and xenazanthin. These nutrients have been shown to have incredible effects on eye health. So it’s important to eat the whole egg, and not just the white. Eggs contain choline which is important for maintaining brain function and memory. These nutrients are just an added benefit to the appetite suppressing qualities.

Broccoli and cauliflower, two of the most suitable vegetables on the Atkins programme, also have appetite-suppressant effects. These vegetables are very bulky and they help make your stomach feel full. When your stomach feels full, it will actually create a chemical response in your body. Your body will reduce its call for food because it believes that your stomach is full of high calorie foods. This occurs regardless of what is actually in your stomach. You can achieve the same results with water and psyllium husk fibre. Both broccoli and cauliflower provide bulk in your diet and are essential vegetables for the Atkins plan.

The Atkins plan recommends eating small, protein packed meals a few times per day. This will help maintain your blood sugar level in a stabilized state and avoid carbohydrate-induced cravings. With high carbohydrate diets, you are riding a roller-coaster of carbohydrate highs. After you have eaten, you feel fantastic and full. Then after a few hours, you come crashing down and are hungrier than you were previous to eating the carbohydrates. This cycle continues ad infinitum and, over time, you will eat more and more and eventually put on weight.

The protein, fat and vegetable meals of the Atkins diet put your blood sugar back in balance. They provide just enough of each sort of food, with the correct amount of carbohydrates (from the vegetables). The vegetables provide quick carbohydrate energy, and the protein gives the meal its sustainability. This combination suppresses your appetite effectively throughout the day.

The Atkins diet is actually a craving control diet that helps suppress your appetite. If you’ve had a problem with carbohydrate cravings before, this new way of eating will help control those cravings. The more you eat on the plan, the better your cravings will be controlled and the easier it will be to follow the diet. Really, the longer you follow the plan, the more it works and the easier following the diet gets.

Tanning Bed Lamps

November 10th, 2009 Gail Jones No comments

Tanning bed lamps are located in every tan bed or suntan lamp in the shops. When you are purchasing a new or especially a used suntan bed, make a good examination of the lamps. Ensure that they are real tanning lamps and meet the FDA regulations with regard to health and safety. You should also consider how difficult it is to get at the lamps. Make sure that the bulbs are easy to change when the time comes. It is very important, and a lot cheaper, if you can carry out such simple maintenance yourself, if you have a home tanning bed.

There are two very different, non-interchangeable types of lamps used in conventional and high pressure beds. You need to ensure you get the right sun bed lamps for your sun bed, because you cannot use just any bulb you like. If you are purchasing replacement bulbs on the Internet, check the make and model of your existing lamps very carefully, because you have to make sure that the lamps you are ordering are suitable for your bed.

High Pressure Tanning Bulbs: high pressure beds have quartz-tube lamps in a multitude of sizes. The gases used in these bulbs are pressurized to slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The lamps in these beds are located in the hood of the bed, so that you tan only from above. When you have tanned the skin on one side of your body for about 10-12 minutes, you turn over and tan the other side. The flat bed of these devices is a great deal more comfortable than a regular tanning bed.

One of the biggest advantage of these HP lamps is the amount of time you have to spend on the sun bed. Because you tan faster, you need to spend less time in the tanning salon, which means it works out cheaper. You can achieve the depth of tan you want in about three weeks of three to five sessions a week. However, with a low pressure bed, it would take you at least a month to achieve the same level of colour. Maintaining your tan is a lot easier too. You only need two or three sessions each month to maintain the colour, as opposed to four times that many visits to a low pressure salon bed. Many of these bulbs use UVA rays only, not UVB rays which cause sunburn.

Conventional Sun Bed Bulbs: Conventional, or low pressure beds use long tube lamps that look like household fluorescent tubes. The lamps are located above and below the bed of the sun bed, which means that all areas are tanned at the same time, without the need to change positions during the session.

Low pressure beds use UVA and UVB rays in varying mixes. Some use both and others use mostly UVA with a bit of UVB rays. UVA rays are the cause of the (premature) ageing effects on the skin and UVB rays are the burning rays that produce sunburn when you are outside in the sun. It is very important to discover which type of rays your tan bed emits. You must be sure to replace your existing bulbs with comparable new lamps after about 1,000 hours of use.

Another consideration when selecting the type of bed you use at home or in the salon, is the tanning bed lotion you will use. Different lotions suit different types of beds. The staff at your tanning salon can help you choose a lotion that will be best for the bed you are using and your skin type. No matter what bed you use, you should certainly always use a lotion or a cream, because they will moisturise your skin and help you tan faster.
